STAY & PLAY

LA QUINTA RESORT & CLUB

La Quinta, California

By Mayleen Ramey

La Quinta Resort & Club holds a special place in my heart. Not because it's my preferred place to stay in the Palm Springs area. Or because it's considered one of the best tennis and golf resorts in the country. La Quinta is special to me because it was the first resort I visited and filmed at when I was hired as the host of Destination Tennis (my travel show on Tennis Channel) years ago. I remember stepping into an unknown world, excited about the possibilities ahead, yet unaware how this one show would ultimately shape the course of my career and life moving forward.

I recall being struck by the beauty of the 45-acre property against the Santa Rosa mountains, lined with hacienda-style casitas and citrus trees, which feels you've been transported to a Spanish village. While hitting onto the stunning, sunken stadium court, pretending to be an elite athlete rather than amateur player, one can easily slip away from reality here. I've since become a regular at La Quinta Resort, visiting for the Indian Wells tournament, Coachella or a quick tennis getaway from LA. The awe and nostalgia from that first visit has never faded, I'm pleasantly reminded each time I arrive.

Tennis Paradise

With 21 tennis and eight pickleball courts set against a jaw-dropping background, how could you not call this "paradise"? Not only are the courts beautifully-maintained, but the extensive year-round offerings like group clinics and coaching are second to none. Director of Racquet Sports, Kevin Connolly, has built a thriving tennis and pickleball program here, with a community of players, who like me, come back every year and also call La Quinta our "home in the desert".

Before the flurry of events and pro players arrived for the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, I had a chance to visit and hit on the newly-resurfaced sunken stadium court, which had been painted from a bright blue to a vibrant, eye-catching purple!

Pickleball Too!

While tennis and golf have been fixtures of the resort since the 1920's, La Quinta has graciously evolved to welcome the latest sports craze. Forgoing three tennis courts to construct eight, pretty pickleball courts, these facilities have become just as popular as their tennis offerings. It's lovely to see these two sports and their players, usually rivals, coexisting peacefully side-by-side.

Stay & Play A While

While my main focus is tennis, La Quinta Resort & Club offers that and so much more, making it one of my favorite tennis resorts in the world. The accommodations are outstanding, with the spa villas or the spacious tennis condos being my preferred choices. The restaurants are festive, tasty and within all dining budgets. And the grounds are simply dreamy! If staying during the BNP Paribas Open or Coachella, guests can ride a complimentary shuttle to and from the events, which are both just minutes away.
